Remodeling Trends & High ROI Projects – 2021 Edition

We can all agree that 2020 was an unprecedented year. While it wasn’t the year we were hoping for, it did provide homeowners with the opportunity to begin gathering concepts for new spaces in their homes. Whether that means finally taking a sledgehammer to that outdated tub and shower in your master bathroom, expanding your square footage through a custom home addition, or updating your kitchen design to be more functional and inviting. With so many materials, products, and space layout possibilities to choose from; you may be wondering what trends will give you the most ROI and look great for years to come.

We’ve compiled new home trends in 2021 to be aware of, such as:

  • Kitchen remodeling trends
  • Bathroom remodeling trends
  • Materials & remodeling ideas for 2020

We’ll also share how to come up with a concept for your space, and projects that return the highest ROI when it comes time to sell.

One of the things we speak on in our free Choosing the Right Remodeling Company for your Project e-book is being prepared. An easy way to organize all of the ideas you see here and other places on the web is through an ideabook. Houzz lets you create a free profile and ideabooks for photos you come across on its site and organize them by room. Additionally, Pinterest can help you save images and articles from the web as well.

Pro Tip: Doing the above before meeting with a remodeling contractor to discuss your project can help you better share what you like about each photo and keep you and your contractor on the same page. Additionally, once your project begins, a shared Pinterest board and Houzz ideabook can serve as a place to share which specific products and materials you’d like.

With that being said, let us take a look at what you can expect to see in home design in 2021.

2021 Will See More Shower Designs and Less White Bathroom Designs

Shower Design Trends 2021 - Color Palette

In our 2020 remodeling trends blog, we shared how bathroom design would begin moving away from all-white subway tile and calacatta countertops. In 2021, all-white bathrooms will be phased out.

Neutral colors resembling outdoor landscapes will become a staple in not just bathroom design but home design in general. Shades of olive green, yellow ochre, and burnt orange are largely taking over in homes, bringing warmth as well as an association with nature. However, it won’t be used in the ways you think. These days, neutral color tones go beyond paint colors and are being incorporated in materials.

For example, showers in 2021 will likely feature metallic shimmers and earth-toned trimming on metal touches like fixtures.

Bathroom Vanity Designs

Neutral tones carry over to bathroom vanities in 2021. Expect to see vanities that feature wood elements, stone, and metal. Floating vanities will be making a comeback this year. A floating double vanity provides space for storage and under-cabinet lighting and can be a great way to add to the aesthetics of the room. You can also mix up an upper stone surface, along with a wooden lower one, or vice versa for a great look.

Kitchen Remodeling in 2021

Kitchen Design Trends in 2021

In 2021, the kitchen became one of the most used rooms in the home due to many offices and schools allowing their employees and students to work from home. This made many stop and think about what functionality could be added to their kitchens to best fit their shifts in lifestyles and family needs. This comes as no surprise as renovating the kitchen provides the most return on your investment.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to your kitchen and let the year’s latest trends shine bright this year, read on

Here are the top kitchen remodeling trends in 2021

Under-cabinet lighting is also trending in the kitchen and for obvious reasons. Adding undermount lighting to cabinets can provide a soft light in the evening instead of the usual bright overhead lighting. It will also give you more visibility to cook, clean, and entertain in your kitchen.

Pro Tip: Use kitchen and dining light fixtures that can be dimmed to a softer tone after the cooking and work are done so that everyone can relax.

Gold hardware. Unlike the bright brass hardware that was popular in the late twentieth century, today’s modern gold hardware is a bit more muted and often has a matte finish. It can be mixed and matched with other metallic finishes such as stainless steel appliances or faucets, or stand alone as the dominant finish.

Dark cabinetry. In recent years, we have seen white and off-white used a lot on kitchen cabinetry. In 2021, its use will still be popular in certain designs such as farmhouse kitchens. However, the use of darker cabinets in the grey, blue, and brown families will be used to add a pop of color on an island, or they can be incorporated throughout.

Open shelves & deep kitchen drawers. Another trend we’ll see in 2021 is using shelves with cabinets to showcase specialty items. Rustic and industrial kitchen designs can benefit from this approach as open shelving in the kitchen provides a convenient location for spices and cookware.

Quartz countertops: Quartz has surpassed granite as a popular kitchen countertop because it is more affordable and just as luxurious. Our Top 4 Kitchen Countertop Materials blog goes into detail on the benefits of quartz compared to granite, soapstone, and marble countertops.

More specifically, light-colored quartz is majorly trending and is currently the most popular style of countertop on the market. Choices like Bianco Calacatta, Arion, and Alabaster White are a few popular choices.
