Whole Home Remodeling in Fanwood, NJ

Planning major changes to your Fanwood home? Let’s talk about what is possible.
What Is Included in a Whole Home Remodel in Fanwood, NJ?
A whole home remodel involves renovating multiple areas of a house as part of one coordinated project. That does not necessarily mean changing every square foot.
For one Fanwood, NJ homeowner, it might mean opening the kitchen to the adjoining living area, renovating two bathrooms, replacing flooring and updating lighting throughout the first floor.
For another, it could involve reconfiguring the first floor, improving the second floor and adding additional living space. Depending on the home and project goals, a whole home renovation may include:
- Floor plan and layout changes
- Structural modifications
- Kitchen and bathroom renovations
- Flooring throughout multiple rooms
- Interior doors, trim and custom millwork
- Lighting and electrical improvements
- Plumbing changes
- Storage improvements
- Basement renovations
- Additional living space
- Updates to aging portions of the home
- Exterior improvements related to the larger renovation
The important distinction is not how many individual services are included. It is how those improvements are planned together.
Instead of approaching the kitchen, bathrooms, flooring and adjoining spaces as unrelated projects, we consider how each decision affects the finished home.
When Does a Whole Home Renovation Make Sense for a Fanwood Home?
There is no single reason homeowners decide to renovate most of their house. Sometimes the home simply has not been substantially updated in decades. In other cases, the finishes are not the real problem. The way the house is laid out no longer fits the people living there.
A comprehensive renovation may be worth considering if:
- Several rooms need substantial updates
- Your existing floor plan feels closed off or inefficient
- You want better connections between the kitchen, dining and living spaces
- Previous renovations have left the home feeling inconsistent
- Your family needs more functional living or storage space
- You are purchasing an older home that needs significant improvements
- You want to modernize the house without moving
- You are considering an addition along with interior renovations
- Structural changes will affect several areas of the home
During the initial planning process, we look beyond individual finishes and ask a more important question: How should this house work for you when the renovation is finished?
Can You Change the Floor Plan During a Whole Home Remodel in Fanwood, NJ?
Yes. Changing the layout is one of the reasons many homeowners consider a whole home renovation rather than simply replacing finishes. A floor plan renovation could involve opening previously separated rooms, changing doorways, improving circulation between spaces, enlarging a kitchen, creating better storage or changing how existing rooms are used.
But changing a floor plan involves more than deciding which walls should disappear. Walls may contain plumbing, electrical wiring, HVAC components or structural elements. Removing or relocating them can also affect flooring, ceilings, trim, lighting and adjoining spaces.
SEI evaluates these relationships during planning so layout decisions are made within the context of the entire renovation.
The goal is not simply to create a more open house. It is to create a better functioning home.
Whole Home Remodeling for Older Homes in Fanwood, NJ
Older and historic homes often have qualities homeowners specifically want to preserve. Original trim, millwork, room proportions and architectural details can contribute to the character of the house, even when the layout and functionality need significant improvement.
A whole home remodel provides an opportunity to decide what is worth preserving and what should change. That can be particularly important when renovating multiple areas because decisions in one room often affect another.
Opening a wall can change flooring transitions and trim. Expanding a kitchen can affect its relationship with the dining and living areas. Replacing architectural details in one portion of the house can make adjoining spaces feel disconnected.
Our approach is not to make an established home look like an entirely different house simply because it is being renovated. Instead, we look for opportunities to improve how the home functions while creating a finished renovation that feels intentional and appropriate for the property.
How Much Does a Whole Home Remodel Cost in Fanwood, NJ?
There is no single price for a whole home remodel because the scope can vary dramatically from one property to another.
The cost of a whole home renovation in Fanwood will depend on factors such as:
- The size of the home
- How much of the house is being renovated
- Existing conditions
- Structural modifications
- Layout changes
- Kitchen and bathroom scope
- Plumbing and electrical requirements
- Material and finish selections
- Custom cabinetry and millwork
- Whether additional square footage is being created
- Permitting requirements
- The complexity of the overall project
A renovation involving several existing rooms will have a very different budget from a project that changes the floor plan, adds square footage and updates major portions of the home’s systems. That is why SEI develops the scope before establishing project pricing.
We would rather help homeowners understand what their renovation actually involves than provide a broad number that may have little relationship to their house.
During the planning process, we can also discuss priorities and determine where your remodeling budget can have the greatest impact on the finished home.
Can You Live in Your Fanwood Home During a Whole House Remodel?
Possibly. Whether you can remain in your home depends on what is being renovated and how construction can be sequenced.
If work is concentrated in specific portions of the house, it may be possible to continue living in other areas. A more extensive renovation involving multiple floors, major structural work or critical home systems may make temporarily relocating the more practical option.
This is something we discuss during project planning rather than giving every homeowner the same answer. Understanding the construction sequence ahead of time also helps you prepare for periods when kitchens, bathrooms, utilities or other essential areas may be temporarily unavailable.
Do You Need Permits for a Whole Home Remodel in Fanwood, NJ?
Many substantial remodeling projects require permits and inspections, but the exact requirements depend on what is being changed. A whole home renovation may involve building, electrical, plumbing, fire, zoning or other approvals depending on the project scope.
The Borough of Fanwood notes that home improvement projects are subject to applicable review and permitting requirements, which may involve Zoning, Construction, Engineering and other municipal departments. Requirements and fees depend on the specific improvement and applicable municipal and New Jersey construction regulations.
Projects requiring construction permits are also subject to applicable inspections as work progresses.
For homeowners, that means permitting should be considered during planning rather than after the renovation has already been designed.
We coordinate applicable permitting and inspections as part of the remodeling process so those requirements can be incorporated into the project before construction begins.

We recently hired SEI Construction Inc. for a complete kitchen remodel, and they exceeded our expectations from start to finish. We were honestly pretty hesitant because this was our second time hiring a contractor after the first one abandoned the project midway through. After meeting with several kitchen remodeling companies, Mike and his team immediately gave us confidence that our home was finally in the right hands. They handled every part of the project, from the design phase through construction. The kitchen remodeling services we hired them for included designing and configuring custom cabinetry, helping us choose quartz countertops, lighting, flooring, backsplash, repainting the space and coordinating every trade. Everything stayed organized, communication was excellent, and we always knew what to expect. After our first experience, trusting another contractor wasn't easy, but SEI completely restored our confidence. They treated our home with respect, kept the work area organized, and cleaned the job site at the end of each day, which made living through the remodel much easier. They delivered a kitchen that's both beautiful and functional, and the quality of the craftsmanship exceeded our expectations! If you're looking for a kitchen remodeling contractor in Scotch Plains, NJ or the surrounding area, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend SEI Construction Inc. They did exactly what they promised, communicated every step of the way, and gave us the kitchen we had been hoping for all along.Posted on Google![]()

We recently bought a home in Scotch Plains, NJ that needed a lot of updating, and hiring SEI Construction as our general contractor was the best decision we made. What I really loved about working with SEI was that they were able to handle both the design and construction side of the project. Instead of having to coordinate multiple companies, they worked with architects and designers to help us create the spaces we wanted that were not only beautiful and customized to our needs, but also safe, functional, and built to last. They renovated our kitchen, remodeled our primary bathroom, and finished our basement. The custom cabinetry they built for the kitchen is absolutely beautiful and completely transformed the space to something out of a magazine. Mike had great ideas throughout the project and helped us make decisions that improved both the look and functionality of our home. Another thing that stood out was how respectful they were of our home during construction. At the end of every day, they cleaned up the job site and kept everything organized. They also used equipment that continuously pulled dust and debris from the air during construction, which made a huge difference and helped keep the rest of the house much cleaner than we expected. Everyone was professional, easy to communicate with, and genuinely cared about the quality of their work. It gave us a lot of peace of mind knowing that Mike and his team were overseeing every detail of the project. If you're looking for a general contractor in Scotch Plains, NJ for a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, basement finishing project, custom cabinetry, home remodeling, or a complete home renovation, I highly recommend SEI Construction. We couldn't be happier with the results and would gladly hire them again.Posted on Google![]()

SEI has worked for us for many years and we totally rely on Mike's expertise and workmanship, as well as his creativity. In our home he has remodeled our bathrooms and full basement and extensive updates on our dining room, kitchen, both studies and family room. He has also done repairs to our roof and outside balconies and replaced sliding doors. There is very little of the house he has not improved. His thoughts on design are modern and sleek while keeping the history and period of our house design in mind. When it was important to get the work done quickly, such as a flood in the basement or a leak in our dining room, Mike and his crew were there immediately, and always stayed until the jobs were done, I totally trust MIKE and his crew, to the point that they have total access to our home with security codesPosted on Google![]()

This was the third project and the most extensive project that we hired SEI for. We felt very comfortable working with all his crew, they were easy to communicate with and always kept us up to date on the progress. I especially like Mike's detailed estimates. They are easy to read and you know exactly what he is going to do and when he needs payment for each step. You can depend on Mike to check in on the progress at each stage and if you have any issues he addresses them immediately and to your satisfaction. The quality of their work is terrific and the job is not complete until the last detail has been addressed and the final inspection is in your hands and everyone is happy with the result.Posted on Google![]()

2 years ago, SEI redid our outside deck, remodeled a downstairs bathroom and installed composite railing in the front of our house. The team was professional, courteous and responsive, and the fit / finish was excellent. Just this month, I called them back to replace a broken cap on the composite railing (winter weather casualty) and to screw down some deck boards that were in danger of coming up. The team came back and did the work at no charge and found more missing / broken screws than I did. Very pleased with their response and happy to recommend a local, quality contractor.Posted on Google![]()

SEI construction added a net-new master suite, remodeled 1 full bath, created a net-new full bath in the basement, and redid all HVAC duct work, roofing, and siding. Our contractor selection criteria was quality and project management. We needed good communication and a central point of contact for questions, and SEI checked those boxes at a very reasonable price. The owner Mike Rizzo was a great communicator and very relatable. He always made technical topics Easy to understand. He’s got young kids and was great to our kids. Always patient and accommodating. Our project lead was Tyler. He was friendly, funny, and an expert carpenter. There was quality and precision in everything he built. He was really nice to my 6 and 8 daughters every day and even got my youngest a birthday present. So thoughtful! He also let me bang a few nails so I felt part of the build process. I’m thrilled with the work they did. Very content with the price we paid, and so grateful for their attention to every detail, which makes all the difference in the world. I would recommend SEI to anyone looking to remodel or add new space.
